Freelife slimmed down to weight loss

Beyond Slim provides executive information on its website, however it’s hidden at the bottom of the product and opportunity website pages.

Beyond Slim is headed up by founder and CEO, Ray Faltinsky (right).

As per Faltinsky’s Beyond Slim corporate bio, he’s credited with

having launched over 100 products around the world and generated over $1 billion in total sales

BehindMLM first came across Faltinsky in our January 2014 L’dara International review.

Alongside L’dara International, Faltinsky also ran FreeLife, an MLM company he founded in 1995.

L’dara International marketed L’dara serum, an anti-aging product. Freelife operated in the weight loss MLM niche.

L’dara International appears to have disappeared on or around mid 2017. At the time of publication Freelife’s website domain was unresponsive.

The last posts made to Freelife’s Facebook page are from mid 2017, suggesting the plug was pulled on both Freelife and L’dara International around the same time.

Beyond Slim appears to have launched only a few months ago. The company’s official Facebook page was created in July, 2020.

Under Ray Faltinsky’s leadership, Freelife was a defendant in a civil class action filed in Arizona.

Freelife settled the lawsuit, which pertained to

false claims, misrepresentations, false and deceptive advertising and other issues regarding FreeLife’s Himalayan Goji Juice, GoChi, and TaiSlim products’.

Beyond Slim provides a corporate address in Arizona on its website. Further research however reveals this is actually a a UPS store.

Read on for a full review of Beyond Slim’s MLM opportunity.

Beyond Slim’s Products

Beyond Slim’s flagship product is ZipSlim, a weight loss supplement.

As per Beyond Slim’s marketing, ZipSlim is meant to be taken twice a day before meals.

Beyond Slim claims combining ZipSlim with dieting will result in customers losing ‘3x more weight than with dieting alone’.

If for some reason you are not happy, you are protected by our 90 day, 100% money-back guarantee (not including shipping).

ZipSlim is available in both caffeine and caffeine-free varieties. Both retail for $239.90 for a monthly supply (60 servings). Retail Autoship comes to $159.90 a month.

One pouch of thirty ZipSlim servings retails at $119.95 ($79.95 autoship).

If retail customers remain on autoship for three consecutive months, they receive an additional 12% discount from month four onward.

Beyond Slim’s Compensation Plan

Beyond Slim pays commissions on sales volume generated across a unilevel team.

Additional performance and rank-based bonuses are also available.

Beyond Slim primarily calculates commissions and bonuses based on generated sales volume (BV).

BV is generated via the purchase of Beyond Slim products by retail customers and recruited affiliates.

  • purchase of one pouch of ZipSlim (30 servings) = 50 BV
  • autoship order (30 servings) = 50 BV
  • Loyal subscriber (autoship orders after month 3) = 40 BV

Note that up to 200 BV is counted from any referred retail customer or recruited affiliate each month.

Beyond Slim’s compensation documentation states this is to prevent manipulation of the compensation plan.

Referral Points are another metric Beyond Slim uses to calculate some bonuses.

Referral Points are calculated monthly as follows:

  • 1 point per new retail autoship customer
  • 1 point per newly recruited affiliate on autoship (bonus point if recruited affiliate signs up a new retail autoship customer within the same month)
  • 6 points when a personally recruited affiliate qualifies at any rank between Influencer 1 and Silver Influencer 1

New retail and recruited affiliate autoship customers generate 1 Referral Point a month for three months.

Beyond Slim Affiliate Ranks

There are forty affiliate ranks within Beyond Slim’s compensation plan.

Along with their respective qualification criteria, they are as follows:

  • Social Marketer – sign up as a Beyond Slim affiliate and refer and maintain one retail autoship customer
  • Social Marketer 2 – generate and maintain two retail autoship customers
  • Social Marketer 5 – generate and maintain five retail autoship customers
  • Influencer 1 – generate and maintain ten retail autoship customers and 1 Referral Point a month
  • Influencer 2 – generate and maintain twelve retail autoship customers and 1 Referral Point and 1000 GV a month

  • Gold Influencer 8 – maintain thirty retail autoship customers, generate 6 Referral Points and 120,000 PRGV a month, and maintain ten personally recruited affiliates (four must be Macro Influencers)
  • Gold Influencer 9 – maintain thirty retail autoship customers, generate 6 Referral Points and 130,000 PRGV a month, and maintain ten personally recruited affiliates (four must be Macro Influencers)
  • Platinum Influencer 1 – maintain thirty retail autoship customers, generate 6 Referral Points and 150,000 PRGV a month, and maintain ten personally recruited affiliates (five must be Macro Influencers)
  • Platinum Influencer 2 – maintain thirty retail autoship customers, generate 6 Referral Points and 170,000 PRGV a month, and maintain ten personally recruited affiliates (four must be Macro Influencers and one an Elite Influencer)
  • Platinum Influencer 3 – maintain thirty retail autoship customers, generate 6 Referral Points and 190,000 PRGV a month, and maintain ten personally recruited affiliates (four must be Macro Influencers and one an Elite Influencer)
  • Platinum Influencer 4 – maintain thirty retail autoship customers, generate 6 Referral Points and 210,000 PRGV a month, and maintain ten personally recruited affiliates (three must be Macro Influencers and two Elite Influencers)

  • Platinum Influencer 9 – maintain thirty retail autoship customers, generate 6 Referral Points and 310,000 PRGV a month, and maintain ten personally recruited affiliates (one must be a Macro Influencer and four Elite Influencers)
  • Diamond Influencer – maintain thirty retail autoship customers, generate 350,000 PRGV a month, and maintain ten personally recruited affiliates (five must be Elite Influencers)

GV stands for “Group Volume” and is BV generated across five levels of an affiliate’s unilevel team.

PRGV stands for “Personally Recruited Group Volume”, and is sales volume generated by personally recruited affiliates.

To count towards retail autoship customer requirements, autoship orders must be active.

To count towards recruited affiliate requirements, recruited affiliates must have at least one active retail customer (min 40 BV a month order).

Note that Macro Influencers and Elite Influencers aren’t defined in Beyond Slim’s compensation plan. Nevertheless I believe these are terms used to group specific rank subsets.

E.g. Macro Influencers could be Influencer 1 to Silver Influencer 9. Note that this just a hypothetical. Again, actual definitions are not provided.

Customer Introduction Commission

The Customer Introduction Commission is paid on both retail and recruited affiliate customers’ autoship orders, for the first three months of the order.

The Customer Introduction Commission pays 50% of generated BV on new retail and recruited affiliate autoship orders.

After the first three months, autoship commissions are paid out under the Loyal Customer Commission (see below)

Loyal Customer Commission

The Loyal Customer Commission pays on retail autoship orders from the fourth month after the order was placed.

Monthly Loyal Customer Commission rates are determined by how many retail customers on autoship an affiliate has for that month:

  • generate and maintain 1 to 9 retail autoship customers and receive a 10% Loyalty Customer Commission rate
  • generate and maintain 10 to 29 retail autoship customers and receive a 15% % Loyalty Customer Commission rate
  • generate and maintain 30+ retail autoship customers and receive a 20% Loyalty Customer Commission rate

Loyalty Customer Commission rates are doubled for the month if an affiliate meets the following criteria in that month:

  • enroll five new retail autoship customers
  • maintain an 80% retail autoship customer retention rate

Residual Commissions

Beyond Slim pays residual commissions via a unilevel compensation structure.

A unilevel compensation structure places an affiliate at the top of a unilevel team, with every personally recruited affiliate placed directly under them (level 1):

If any level 1 affiliates recruit new affiliates, they are placed on level 2 of the original affiliate’s unilevel team.

If any level 2 affiliates recruit new affiliates, they are placed on level 3 and so on and so forth down a theoretical infinite number of levels.

Beyond Slim caps payable residual commissions at five unilevel team levels.

  • Social Marketers 2 are paid residual commissions on one unilevel team level
  • Social Marketers 5 are paid residual commissions on two unilevel team levels
  • Influencers and higher are paid residual commissions on all five available unilevel team levels

As per the above qualification criteria, residual commissions are paid as 10% of BV generated by ZipSlim orders across up to five unilevel team levels.

Note that Beyond Slim caps payable residual commissions based on rank:

  • Social Marketer 2s can earn up to $50 a month
  • Social Marketer 5s can earn up to $100 a month
  • Influencer 1s can earn up to $250 a month
  • Influencer 2s can earn up to $400 a month

Conclusion

Back in 2011, Freelife claimed it would “soon become the Worldwide Leader in Healthy Weight Loss”.

With Beyond Slim, that marketing pitch has been slimmed down to the US.

At Beyond Slim, we started with a simple question: Can we help those 185 million overweight adult Americans to lose weight and become fitter, healthier and happier?

Using the latest scientific breakthroughs in weight loss, the answer is YES! ZipSlim, our delicious Blackberry Lemonade drink mix can help you lose 3X more weight than dieting alone, reduce your cravings and appetite, and help you become fitter, healthier and happier!

I didn’t see any egregious health claims, so it seems Falkinsky has learned and moved on from the Arizona Freelife lawsuit.

With respect to the “lose 3X more weight than dieting alone” claim, this is based on a study featuring ZipSlim’s key ingredient.

Fifty overweight people (BMI 28-36) using a key ingredient in ZipSlim™, along with a lower calorie diet (1350 calories for women/1850 calories for men), lost 30 pounds in just 13 weeks, compared to just 10 pounds for those following the lower calorie diet alone.

F. Di Pierro, A.B. Menghi, A. Barreca, M. Lucarelli, and A. Calandrelli, “GreenSelect Phytosome as an adjunct to a low-calorie diet for treatment of obesity: a clinical trial,” Alternative Medicine Review, vol. 14, no. 2, pp. 154-160, 2009.

I looked up “GreenSelect Phytosome” and it’s just green tea extract. It’s one of the ingredients in ZipSlim, so it appears to be the key ingredient they’re referencing.

ZipSlim retails at $239.90 for a monthly supply. Each serving contains 530 mg of an “metabolic activation complex” containing, among other things, an undisclosed amount of GreenSelect Phytosome.

If GreenSelect Phytosome is the key ingredient doing most of the heavy lifting, without too much effort I found GreenSelect Phytosome 600mg capsules available from Walmart for ~$20 (60 capsules).

I’m not a nutritional expert but I believe this puts a big question mark over ZipSlim’s retail viability.

Of course that’s straight GreenSelect Phytosome. ZipSlim contains other ingredients but they market big on GreenSelect Phytosome, so that’s what I focused on.

The good news is Beyond Slim has a healthy retail orientated compensation plan.

Maxing out the compensation plan requires referral of and maintenance of thirty active retail customers. And this begins early on, with Social Marketer 2 requiring two retail autoship customers.

Getting anywhere with Beyond Slim’s MLM opportunity requires a focus on generating retail customers who are happy to maintain an autoship order. That unfortunately brings us back to ZipSlim’s retail viability.

Beyond requiring active retail customers, Beyond Slim encourages retail sales via Loyal Customer Commission, which as far as I can tell excludes affiliate orders.

There’s also “Beyond Bucks”, which I didn’t cover in the compensation section as it’s not a financial incentive.

When you enroll 2 Preferred Customers, you immediately begin earning Beyond Bucks to use toward FREE ZipSlim!

Beyond Bucks are calculated as “the average of your two highest personal Preferred Customers’ Subscribe & Save orders” (autoship).

Affiliates can earn up to $160 in Beyond Bucks each month, which can be put towards their own autoship order.

The only real issue I had with Beyond Slim’s compensation plan was the excessive ranks. I get that this is done to limit how much affiliates can earn, but surely some of the forty ranks can be consolidated.

If you think you can sell a weight loss supplement to retail customers for $239.90 (retail), or $159.90 (autoship) a month, then Beyond Slim gives you plenty of room to grow.

Personally I’m kind of curious what happened to Freelife, and if we aren’t just seeing an opportunistic reboot because of the pandemic.

If Freelife went under because its products weren’t retail competitive, Beyond Slim is going to have the same issue. At least that’s what I’m getting based on the five minutes of price comparison I did.

This calls into question longevity, as $1918.80 annually on a green tea extract supplement isn’t a joke. More so given far cheaper alternatives.

The pandemic works both ways; people have been/are putting on weight – but they’re also tightening up their wallets.

As I understand it Beyond Slim is limited to the US. Do your research on what’s available locally and go from there.

Update 25th November 2020 – Ray Faltinsky has reached out to BehindMLM to provide

context that your readers might find valuable straight from the source about our past, our present, and where I see our company going in the future.

According to Faltinsky, ‘FreeLife & L’dara were sold to Youngevity, neither company collapsed.’

Neither company “collapsed” or had the “plug pulled on” them as stated in the review on your site.

In June 2017 we sold both companies (under the combined name Sorvana) to Youngevity in a partnership that was very successful for everyone.

When I use the word “collapse” in relation to an MLM company, it’s typically referring to the end of said company. Typically thriving MLM companies aren’t combined and sold off.

Still, in the traditional sense of a collapse it’s possible to keep an MLM company open before selling it off. With respect to L’Dara in the review introduction, I’ve changed the word “collapsed” to “disappeared”.

I’m hesitant to acknowledge the sale to Youngevity in my original review as when I went looking for an explanation nothing came up. This is what led me to concluding L’dara and Freelife had simply been abandoned.

With respect to the legal action in Arizona;

We were never sued by any authorities anywhere.  In fact we had no FTC, FDA or any state agency issues ever.

This idea about being sued by Arizona authorities may be a coming from a misrepresentation of case we had many years ago in which an opportunistic class action lawyer brought a lawsuit against FreeLife for some claims that a few of our independent distributors were making about our products.

We believe we would have easily won that case in court, but decided to settle it for a very small amount of money to avoid the distraction those cases can cause.

I went back and looked into the research for this review and realized I’d indeed misread the lawsuit as a government action, when in fact it was a private civil class-action.

That error was on me and I’ve corrected the introduction of the review to reflect the correct nature of the lawsuit.

Faltinsky confirmed Beyond Slim uses a virtual corporate address. He states;

We are a “virtual” company and we were planning on being a virtual company even before COVID. As such, we have no “offices”.

All of our executives, who have a combined 150 years of experience in direct selling, work from home.

In today’s day and age, I believe there is no better way to launch a business, to keep operating costs low, than to be completely virtual.

So yes, our address on file is a UPS store because we need a place to get mail.

One of the key points in our Beyond Slim review was questioning the retail viability of ZipSlim.

This was primarily based on ZipSlim’s key ingredient, GreenSelect Phytosome, being sold elsewhere for much cheaper.

Faltinsky insists the value of ZipSlim lies in the combination of fourteen ingredients.

ZipSlim is made up of 14 ingredients, all listed in our literature, online, and on our packaging, not one single ingredient, and is based on the work of Dr. Mark Drucker from the Center of Advanced Medicine in Encinitas, California.

Dr. Drucker has helped many of his patients lose weight by using these 14 ingredients together, not any single ingredient.

In his practice, he found that his patients were spending over $300 a month buying these 14 ingredients separately.

In addition to 3X more weight loss, many of these ingredients provide additional clinically proven health benefits including increasing muscle strength and physical endurance, reducing stress, improving sleep quality, memory and focus, reducing cravings, appetite and reducing free radicals to name a few.

Plus, ZipSlim comes in a delicious tasting blackberry lemonade flavor, so consumers don’t need to choke down 14 pills 2 times a day.

We have seen a very viable Customer acquisition business so far, which we feel is key to sustainable growth and success for our business and for our Coach’s’ businesses alike.

Finally, after 3 months on Subscribe & Save the monthly price drops down to $139.90 making it even better value for our Loyal Customers. We pride ourselves on being customer driven and customers love us!

Personally I’m still convinced of the price difference. I don’t feel I need to target the areas Faltinsky mentions (outside of my regular diet and excercise), but if I did I’d probably be looking at specialized solutions.

ZipSlim is primarily marketed as a weight loss supplement so that’s where the focus is.

If you’ve read the literature and are looking at weight loss over the long haul, perhaps a comparison is in order to determine whether the fourteen combined products offer a substantial benefit over use of the GreenSelect Phytosome key ingredient alone.
